| Board | | A board of seven business women, from across Prince Edward Island, govern the Association. | | | Leanne Newson - President Leanne is the President of Anvil Mechanical Contractors Ltd.
Recognizing a niche in the local market for well- designed and installed geothermal heating and cooling systems, she and her husband Scott incorporated their business to provide full service heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration services to the commercial, industrial and residential markets of PEI in August 2005. Located in central PEI, the company also services & installs air source heat pumps, restaurant equipment & control systems.
Specializing in environmentally friendly closed loop technology, the company believes in minimizing its environmental footprint and implementing sustainable practices that will benefit the island as a whole.
Leanne received her Bachelor`s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Prince Edward Island in 1995, with honours. Leanne has a number of years of experience in accounting and administration, while Scott, a licensed HVAC technician and co-owner of the company, has over 12 years of experience in the trade. He is an accredited member of the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association, as well as a certified Residential Designer and Installer with the Canadian GeoExchange Coalition.
Leanne is a member of the South Shore, Summerside & Charlottetown Chambers of Commerce, the PEI Construction Association, as well as numerous professional organizations.
Volunteering is also an important part of Leanne`s life. She has been involved with many projects such as Grace Christian Schools Plant a Seed Committee, the North River 4H Club, the fundraising efforts at Crapaud Community Hall, and raising funds to send a local team to Malawi, Africa to construct a church.
Born & raised in PEI, Leanne resides in Hampton with her husband Scott, son Reice and Chocolate Lab Daisy.
| | | Kerry-Anne MacDougall - Vice President After spending several years as a marketing coordinator for both the private and nonprofit sectors, Kerry-Anne and her family moved back to PEI and in 2008 she launched Insight Marketing from her small town home.
Insight Marketing teaches people practical, affordable and effective ways to market their organizations. They give clients a fresh, modern and realistic look at marketing, leaving them feeling motivated and more knowledgeable about their organizations - without breaking the bank. Fancy jargon and lingo aside, the goal of Insight Marketing is to really connect with people so they feel comfortable to learn the skills they need to advance their organizations.
Kerry-Anne has worked with over 50 groups ranging from sport organizations to theatres and business professionals to farmers. She has been inspired by each and every one of them. Kerry-Anne has since hired her first employee. Kerry-Anne and her husband Lauchie live in Pisquid with their two children Will and Addie.
| | | Sherry White - Treasurer Sherry is the owner of Excel Accounting Services Inc., a business she started twenty years ago. It has grown to employ five full-time staff and offers bookkeeping, medical billings, small business and personal tax returns, payroll services and training in Simply Accounting. In 2008, Sherry became PEI's first Certified Professional Bookkeeper. She is also a Certified Consultant in Simply Accounting. Sherry has been an active volunteer with numerous organizations including Speed Skate PEI as a coach and Treasurer and PEI Ladies Golf Association as Teams Director. In addition, she is currently the Treasurer of Belvedere Ladies Golf Association.
| | | Debby Beck - Member at Large Debby Beck has been in the Information Technology industry for 20 years. Since starting her career with Active Communities in 1985, she has seen a lot of changes in the industry. Through her position with Montague Computer, she purchased the company and created jobs for up to 9 people. Since then, Debby has scaled the business back and is now working with Excel Accounting Services in Charlottetown as their Sage Accpac Certified Consultant and Sage BusinessVision Solution Provider. These additional services complement Excel Accounting Services, Simply Accounting designation to offer existing and new clients a wider range of solutions to fit their business requirements.
Over the past 25 years, Debby has been an active volunteer in several community groups such as: The Brudenell Golf Association, PEI Ladies Golf Association, The Rotary Club of Montague, Friends of Harvey Moore Foundation, The PEI Business Women’s Association and several others.
Debby lives in Milltown Cross with her husband Ken, and has two daughters, Kari and Mandi. She also has two Shetland Sheepdogs, Molly and Miki. Debby enjoys growing her new part-time business as a XanGo Distributor and helping others experience positive results in health, wellness and success.
| | | Emma Fugate - Member at Large Emma is the owner and President of E Accounting Services, which has been offering tailored accounting solutions to small business since 2006. E Accounting employs five staff and provides bookkeeping, accounting and tax services to small businesses and their owners.
Before gaining qualifications in Accounting and Business Administration in Canada, Emma worked for eight years in human resource and project management in the UK, US, Japan and Spain. Whilst accounting is now her focus, Emma's broad experience offers clients additional business expertise that they would not usually receive from a bookkeeper. Since coming to Canada, Emma received the Governor General's Collegiate Bronze Medal and has been recognized by Charlottetown Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club of Charlottetown Royalty for her business planning, entrepreneurship and contribution to the community.
As well as running her business, Emma is currently the Treasurer of the Upper Room Hospitality Ministry which operates the Charlottetown Soup Kitchen and Food bank. She is also a volunteer and committee member with the Charlottetown Chamber of Commerce and Easter Seals.
Emma lives in Charlottetown, with her husband Bill and two cats and is looking forward to expanding their family in October 2010.
| | | Pamela Large-Moran - Member at Large Pamela Large-Moran is a lawyer and conflict resolution professional with over 20 years experience. After practicing as a litigator in Toronto for ten years, Pamela returned home to PEI in 2000. While continuing to practice law in both Ontario and PEI, Pamela enrolled in the two year Masters of Law program specializing in Alternative Dispute Resolution (LL.M ADR) at Osgoode Hall Law School which she completed in 2004.
Pamela is the principal of Conflict Resolution Services (CRS) Atlantic, a full service dispute resolution and conflict management company providing professional services in Mediation, Arbitration, process design of dispute resolution systems, conflict management consulting and skills training. CRS Atlantic's services are offered to individuals, governments and corporations across all four Atlantic provinces, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland
Pamela is a Chartered Mediator. (C.Med.), is President of ADR Atlantic as well as Vice-President of the national association of ADR Professionals, the ADR Institute of Canada.
She resides in Charlottetown with her husband and two sons. In her spare time, Pamela enjoys live music and theatre, outdoor activities and is the goaltender for the Charlottetown Hockey Mommas. She is also an active committee member of her Church.
| | | Michelle Ryder-MacEwen - Member at large Michelle Ryder-MacEwen is the Past President of the PEI Business Women’s Association having served March 2009 – February 2010.
Michelle owns and operates two businesses: On the Edge, a skate shop and boutique, and Maritime Rubberized Coatings, a supplier of environmentally safe industrial waterproofing products, located in Stanley Bridge, PEI. On The Edge skating boutique, opened in fall 2007 and serves the figure skating and hockey communities in Atlantic Canada.
Michelle and Leith moved from Southwestern Ontario to PEI in 2005, and they live in Stanley Bridge. They have three children and two grand children.
Michelle grew up in Southwestern Ontario, and for 28 years owned and operated hairdressing salons in Tilbury and Chatham, Ontario. She then worked as the office manager for Lafarge Construction Materials in Chatham, Ontario.
Michelle has been an active member of the Kensington, Summerside & Charlottetown Chambers of Commerce, PEILOCAL.COM, and the Prince Edward Island Construction Association since 2005. She is also a new member of the Prince Edward Island Home Builder’s Association. In 2007, On The Edge received New Business of The Year award from the Kensington and Area Chamber of Commerce.
Volunteering has always been an active part of Michelle’s life. She has been a member of the Board of Health for Kent County (Ontario), an active volunteer with the Terry Fox Foundation, and part of the fundraising team that raised money for construction of a new arena in Tilbury, Ontario. She volunteered with the Stanley Bridge Women’s Institute for their summer celiahs and River Days.
| | | | Staff | | The Association employs three staff. | | | Joan Fleming - Executive Director Email Joan is a native Islander whose own successful business and personal experiences have instilled in her a passion for business, helping others trouble shoot issues and opportunities, learning new things and meeting new people. After receiving her Bachelor of Business Administration from UPEI she joined the Banking industry. During her banking career, she lived in several communities in each of the Maritime Provinces and managed branches in Tyne Valley, Hunter River, Port Hawkesbury, NS and Charlottetown, PEI. Joan gained an extensive knowledge of varying size businesses in a wide variety of industries in addition too a great understanding and respect for the people and their challenges.
She thoroughly enjoyed her recent position at the UPEI School of Business working with many of our bright future leaders in a mentoring and counseling role. In addition to this she also managed several entrepreneurial projects. She has been enthusiastically involved in promoting business and has been instrumental in fostering learning skills and path-finding directionality.
She is an active member of Rotary Club of Charlottetown Royalty, a board member of The Guild and a member of the Charlottetown Chamber of Commerce. From a personal perspective Joan is a visual artist actively involved in various mediums including paint, stained glass, wood and preserving family history and stories.
Joan is an open and approachable individual interested in sharing information and incite in areas such as management, strategic planning, financial strategies, problem solving, training and business start-up. She looks forward to meeting the members of the PEI Business Women’s Association and to assisting Island women in business meet their professional and business objectives.
| | | Elizabeth Noonan - Western PEI Community Outreach Facilitator Email ELIZABETH NOONAN, president of Elizabeth Noonan & Associates a full service Marketing Consulting, Event Management and Communications Company in Summerside. Elizabeth is well known across the Province for establishing the JA PEI Business Hall of Fame, a major fundraiser for Junior Achievement on PEI now in its 13th successful year. She was a consultant on the Marketing Manoeuvres project established and presented by Resources West in 2004 to businesses in Western PEI and (March-June 2005) with La Societe de Developpment de la Baie Acadienne in presenting the Marketing Manoeuvres training program to Businesses in the Acadian region of Prince Edward Island.
Elizabeth has received numerous awards and recognition for her work and is featured in the book entitled “Smart Women”, which focuses on women across Canada who are entrepreneurs. In the book women talk about leadership, making money, management and self-development. She is also profiled in the book “Making History” a celebration of Prince Edward Island Women of the 20th Century and most recently in the December 20O7 Issue of Island Living. She has over 18 years of experience as an entrepreneur and business owner. Elizabeth was an active member of the PEI Business Women’s Association prior to 2OO5 when she was hired as the Community Outreach Facilitator for Western PEI. In this permanent part-time position, Elizabeth counsels women on business start-up, sourcing funding for expansion of their existing business and business management training. She is a volunteer business mentor with the Canadian Youth Business Foundation, sits on the Advisory Council for Entrepreneur Forum PEI, a past member of the board of directors of the Community Foundation of PEI, and a member of the Summerside, Kensington and West Prince Chambers of Commerce. Elizabeth looks forward to working with women business owners in Western PEI, as the Community Outreach Facilitator for PEIBWA in the pre-start-up, start-up and expansions stages of their businesses. | | | Paula Laybolt - Administrative & Accounting Assistant Email Paula joined our staff in January 2008 and is an important part of the everyday administrative/bookkeeping activities of the Association. Paula possesses a diploma in Office Administrative Assistant and a Certificate in Simply Accounting Pro 2006 from the Academy of Learning as well as a diploma in Hospitality Management from Holland College. She brings to her position over five years experience in office administration and over 20 years in customer service. Prior to entering the field of Office Administration in 2002, Paula held various management positions in the hospitality industry in Charlottetown. In her spare time, Paula enjoys volunteering with her daughter's extracurricular activities and spending time with her family.
| | | Jessica Bradley - Membership & Marketing Coordinator Email Jessica is the newest member of PEIBWA staff, joining in May 2010 on a 6-month internship. Jessica recently graduated with a BA in Political Studies from UPEI. She plans to continue her education in the fall 2011, pursuing a Masters degree in Public Relations and Communications. Jessica is proud to be working with an organization committed to advancing women in business on PEI. In her spare time, Jessica enjoys travelling, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
