Marlene Bryenton

 | | | | | Albert Ferrus congratulates Marlene during a reception in her honour at the annual Canadian Red Cross, PEI Region, Humanitarian Award dinner Wednesday, Nov 16 in Charlottetown. | | | | |
One of the greatest obstacles Marlene has faced was breast cancer. Through two separate diagnoses she received her radiation treatments in Moncton, New Brunswick. Believing that having to travel out of province to receive treatment was not in the best interest of Islanders, she lobbied the government and raised awareness so that cancer patients are now able to receive their treatments on Prince Edward Island. She was also successful in having additional mammography units brought to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital to help reduce the waiting period patients had to endure. Realizing that one person with determination could make changes, Marlene then proceeded to coordinate several projects to improve and enhance the lives of others. Through the Lake of Shining Waters IODE, she spearheaded the Baby Thinnk It Over and Wigs for Women Programs. She is the project coordinator for the Joseph A. Ghiz Memorial Park, Picnic Shelter Project and the Chapter's IODE Food For Thought Program. Recently she organized events to celebrate the National Chapter of Canada IODE, Read for Life Literacy Program. She also coordinated the $100 deals for the Upper Room Food Bank which was recognized by Reader's Digest and Canadian Living Magazine. Marlene has been recognized for her efforts with several outstanding awards including the Order of Prince Edward Island, the Honourary Doctorate of Laws Degree from UPEI, Flare Magazine National Volunteer Award, Avon Canada's National Woman of Inspiration Award, Charlottetown Mayor's Citizen's Award, PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women Equality award. Senate of Canada Volunteer Awrd, Health for Life Award, Canada Volunteer Award, Upper Room Food Bank Award and Founder Friends of the Food Bank Award. Marlene's first venture in giving her the time to help others was as a volunteer with the Canadian Red Cross. She served as a volunteer at the hospital during her high school years. This lovely spirit of care for her fellow man has continued througout her life. Her outstanding efforts are an inspiration and her life is a beautiful portrait of the humanitarian spirit. This evening we are pleased to honour Marlene and show our appreciation for her continuous efforts to make the Island, and the world, a better place.
