Charlottetown Photographer to Open Third Annual Show

Alanna Jankov’s third annual photography exhibit titled “Heroes – Common People, Uncommon Acts” is opening on Oct 1, 7pm at the Kier Gallery, 132 Richmond St. Charlottetown. The show features portraits of individuals who
have made sacrifices or taken risks to help others. The images include both people who have reacted decisively at a critical moment as well as individuals who have spent their lives giving to others. Alanna describes the inspiration for this show: “Someone told me a story about a gentleman who
took a huge risk to save two people’s lives. I started to think about what
makes someone a hero and how we define heroism. I wanted the show to get people thinking about their own definitions of heroism and about how they might react if they found themselves in the same
circumstances as my subjects.”
Alanna’s previous shows titled “Portraits of Women” and “Transitions –
junctures that define people’s lives” opened to enthusiastic reviews at the
Kier Gallery in 2002 and 2003 respectively. Her work has been displayed at Veterans Affairs Canada, Status of Women Canada, Timothy’s World Coffee and
the Hector Exhibit Centre in Pictou, NS.
“Transitions” was the subject of a radio documentary on CBC Radio’s Maritime Morning. And currently hangs at Beanz Espresso Bar in
Charlottetown. “Portraits of Women” now belongs to the Government of Canada and hangs in the offices of Status of Women Canada in Charlottetown.
Alanna Jankov is a well-known portrait photographer in Prince Edward Island and has a reputation for her photojournalistic style and willingness to portray controversial subject matter. Alanna was born in Pictou and raised in Caribou Island. She moved to Prince Edward Island in 1988 to pursue her passion for photography. Following her graduation from the Holland College
Photography program, she apprenticed in the photography industry and then established her own studio. She has been working on her own for the past 13 years.
The exhibit will be on display from October 1 to October 14. There will be an artist's reception on October 1, 7pm where the public will be able to meet the photographer and discuss the photographs. Alanna is looking forward to sharing her subjects’ experiences and actions with the public. “I feel that these stories need to be shared and I enjoy listening to people’s comments and watching their reactions as they view the photographs."
